The Hanford Reach is about 51 mi (82 km) long free flowing section of the Columbia River in eastern Washington state . It is named after the large, north-facing river bend of the otherwise south-flowing river.
The Hanford Reach is the only stretch of Columbia in the United States that is neither tidal nor part of a reservoir, apart from a short section between the Canada-United States border and the upper end of Franklin D. Roosevelt Lake , the reservoir of the Grand Coulee Dam . Much of Hanford Reach flows through the Hanford Site , a fissile material production facility built during World War II . It is also the site of the Hanford Reach National Monument , which was created from the original sanctuary of the Hanford Site. Above the Hanford Reach is the Priest Rapids Dam and below the McNary Dam , which at the same time dams the last section of the Snake River , the largest tributary of the Columbia.
The Hanford Reach also includes the remaining rapids of the Coyote Rapids and is home to over forty species of fish including a significant population of the autumn spawning king salmon .
