Hannes Stockinger
Hannes Stockinger (born May 8, 1955 in Ried im Innkreis / Upper Austria ) is an Austrian scientist, university professor and since 2010 head of the Center for Pathophysiology , Infectiology and Immunology as well as the Institute for Hygiene and Applied Immunology at the Medical University of Vienna .
Life
Hannes Stockinger studied biotechnology at the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, Viennaand received a doctorate from this university in 1985. At the Medical University of Vienna, he is currently Professor of Molecular Immunology and Head of both the Center for Pathophysiology, Infectiology and Immunology and the Head of its sub-unit, the Institute for Hygiene and Applied Immunology. He is co-founder of the Biomolecular Therapeutics Competence Center, a pre-competitive platform of the Medical University of Vienna (which is the main shareholder of this facility) with the pharmaceutical industry to identify target structures for the treatment of inflammatory and immunological diseases. His international scientific acceptance and recognition in immunology is reflected in the multitude of functions in national and international scientific societies and organizations into which he was elected or asked in the course of his career. a. President of the Austrian Society for Allergology and Immunology (ÖGAI), member of the Board of Trustees of the Fund for the Promotion of Scientific Research in Austria (FWF) and Treasurer of the European Association of Immunological Societies (EFIS). Hannes Stockinger is also the executive editor of the scientific journals Immunology Letters and BioMed Research International .
In 2019 Stockinger received the Karl Landsteiner Medal from the Austrian Society for Allergology and Immunology .
research
Hannes Stockinger and his research team discovered and described for the first time a number of critical receptors on the surface of immune cells, which not only provide insight into the regulation of the immune system, but are also potential target structures for therapeutic purposes. His research results on cell membrane structures, which are called fat rafts, are also remarkable. It is now assumed that these fat rafts are the first switching points through which the cell processes and controls signals from the environment.
Publications
The work on the first description of a number of cell surface receptors of human immune cells (such as CD31, CD147 etc.) and the contributions to the understanding of signal transduction via the plasma membrane by means of the " lipid rafts " are highly regarded . The results of his research are published in over 170 scientific papers, some of them in journals such as Cell, Nature Methods, Science, Science Signaling, Journal of Experimental Medicine.
Hannes Stockinger has been awarded numerous prizes and honors for his groundbreaking research, including the Austrian Cross of Honor for Science and Art, First Class.
