Hans Christian Andersen Literature Prize
The Hans Christian Andersen Literature Prize ( Danish Hans Christian Andersen Litteraturpris ) is an international literature prize that has been awarded every two years by a committee of the Danish city of Odense since 2007 . The aim is to recognize Hans Christian Andersen's influence on writers around the world, whose texts can be linked to Andersen's name and life's work due to genre-specific relationships or narrative characteristics.
The literary prize is endowed with 500,000 Danish kroner (around 64,000 euros). In addition to the amount of money, the winners receive the bronze sculpture The Ugly Duckling . The sculpture is the work of the sculptor Stine Ring Hansen . In addition, a certificate entitled The Beauty of the Swan will be presented.
This prize should not be confused with the Hans Christian Andersen Prize , the international award for children's book authors and illustrators, which is awarded by the IBBY (International Board on Books for Young People) every two years.
A new piece of music will be composed for all winners, the premiere of which will take place during the award ceremony. In return, the honorees will hold a guest reading in the concert hall or in the town hall of Odense.
In 2010 the Hans Christian Andersen Literature Prize went to the author Joanne K. Rowling for the creation of the world-famous Harry Potter figure. On this occasion, a plaque with her name was placed on the HC Andersen house in Odense. In September 2012 Isabel Allende was presented with the Hans Christian Andersen Literature Prize in Odense. The 2014 award winner is Salman Rushdie .
