Hans-Dörr-Park
The Hans-Dörr-Park is a green area in Worms .
Geographical location
The green area is located in the north of the city center of Worms at an altitude of almost 98 m above sea level. NHN and about 800 m as the crow flies from the Rhine . It is bordered by Mainzer Straße, Johanniterstraße, Gaustraße, Altmühlstraße and the Pfortenring. Mainzer Straße separates the park from the famous "Liebfrauenstift" vineyard to the east and the Liebfrauenkirche in the middle of the vineyard.
To the southwest, only separated by Gaustraße, is the Albert-Schulte-Park . Together, the two parks form a short connection for pedestrians and cyclists between Mainzer Straße and Worms main station .
history
The green area was created on the site of the former Worms City Hospital . This was put into operation in October 1888 when in the second half of the 19th century the existing smaller facilities in the city were no longer sufficient.
The hospital was built on the then northern outskirts as a three-wing complex according to plans by the city architect Karl Hofmann in the neo-renaissance style . The middle wing extended along Mainzer Straße, two side wings each along Johanniterstraße and the gate ring. The hospital pharmacy stood in the center axis of the facility, back in the park as a separate pavilion. The house initially had 105 beds and was expanded several times from 1905. Additional buildings were built in the surrounding green area. The hospital had 270 beds in the 1920s and 800 when the Second World War broke out. It was damaged in air raids during the war, but it was able to continue to operate at around 2/3 of its capacity. In 1946, Hans Dörr took over the hospital as medical director, led the reconstruction and retired here at the end of 1971. The last expansion at this location was in 1976 a nuclear medicine department.
Also in 1976 the foundation stone was laid for the new building of the city hospital in Gabriel-von-Seidl-Straße on Herrnsheimer Höhe near Worms-Herrnsheim near Worms-Hochheim . On June 3, 1981, the hospital moved to its new location. The historic hospital on Mainzer Strasse was demolished. Only the historic iron fence that enclosed the site is still largely preserved today. Slightly more than half of the hospital area subsequently remained undeveloped and was redesigned as Hans-Dörr-Park .
layout
A crossroads crosses the park, connecting the surrounding streets for pedestrians. The horticultural design of the facility is reserved and to a large extent characterized by ruderal vegetation.
Worth knowing
As the link between the Albert School Park and the vineyards at the Liebfrauenkirche, the Hans Dörr Park is an integral part of the green and open space concept "Green Pearl Necklace" of the city of Worms. According to this urban planning concept, the inner-city green areas are to be linked and made more tangible as a whole.
