Hans-Friedrich Franck (born December 20, 1946 in Wismar ; † January 17, 1973 in Dannenberg ) was a fatality on the inner-German border .

death

On the evening of January 16, 1973 the mechanical engineer Hans-Friedrich Franck crossed the inner-German border near Blütlingen , triggering a self- firing system. Officials of the Federal Border Guard , alarmed by the detonation, screams and gunfire, discovered Franck about 150 meters from the demarcation line. He was badly injured and lost a lot of blood from the splinter wounds. Despite immediate surgery and blood donations, he died at around 8 a.m. on January 17, 1973 in the Dannenberg district hospital.

As the family allegedly had no interest in transferring the body to the GDR, it was buried on January 19, 1973 in Dannenberg.

Just three days after his death, the CDU's local branch in Wustrow erected a memorial cross for Franck.

In a trial for the death of Franck and five other escape victims who died from self-shot systems or the use of firearms, the responsible former members of the GDR National Defense Council were sentenced to four and a half to seven and a half years in prison for inciting manslaughter.
