from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hans-Jörg Jacobsen (born April 29, 1949 ) is a German biologist and university professor.

Life

Jacobsen studied biology at the University of Bonn from 1969 . In 1974 he completed his studies with a diploma. Until 1978 he worked as a research assistant at the University of Bonn. In 1978 he received his doctorate. He then continued to work at the Institute for Genetics at the University of Bonn, interrupted by a research stay in Brazil in 1980. In 1986 he received a C2 professorship in Bonn, which he held until 1991 when he accepted a call to Hanover . He has been teaching at Northeastern University in Boston since 2014 .

Act

Jacobsen is head of the plant biotechnology department at the Institute for Plant Genetics at Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz University in Hanover . He is a member of the Presidium of the NaturschutzForum Deutschland (NaFor), Chairman of the Society for Plant Biotechnology and a member of the Board of Directors of the Scientific Group on Green Genetic Engineering. Jacobsen is also a member of the Advisory Board on Genetic Diversity of the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture . He is visiting professor at Northeastern University in Boston.

Jacobsen deals with the development and use of transgenic crops . The focus of work is on improved resistance to pests and abiotic stress such as drought, heat and cold. He is also researching the possibility of high-quality proteins being produced by transgenic plants.

Jacobsen was the scientific initiator of the HannoverGen project. In this project, financed by the state of Lower Saxony , students should be familiarized with the basics of biotechnology through scientific experiments. The project was discontinued in 2013 by the Red-Green state government.

Jacobsen's h-index is 20, with over 1,400 citations.

In addition to his scientific work, Jacobsen also participates in the public debate on biotechnology. He advocates the use of biotechnology, namely genetic engineering , and positions himself as a sharp critic of their opponents. He throws this u. a. Unscientific, selective data selection and economically motivated lobbyism . He also criticizes the media for uncritical reporting on opponents of genetic engineering.

Jacobsen wrote debates a. a. for Spiegel Online and NovoArgumente . He was u. a. interviewed by the magazine Cicero and took part alongside Horst Seehofer and others in a panel discussion organized by the time on the subject of biotechnology. He is also a regular guest author on the political blog Axis des Guten .
