Novo is a weekday online magazine that publishes a book-like collection of essays twice a year. According to its own description, it comments on current events and analyzes political issues "from a consistently humanistic perspective."
History and positions
Emerging from a student initiative against racism, the Novo magazine was founded in 1992 at the TU Darmstadt . The publisher was a student group close to Trotskyism called “Linkswende”, which had no connections whatsoever to a tendency of the same name within the SPD or to an organization in Austria of the same name. In the mid-1990s, the Novo editorial team moved to Frankfurt am Main .
At the end of the decade there was a reorientation in terms of content: from anti-authoritarian left to libertarian, progress-optimistic positions. Novo describes itself today as a “forum for debates” that wants to “contribute to an understanding of the current situation, criticize grievances and ask for ways into a better future”. According to its own statements, the magazine turns against “people educators, professional alarmists, technocrats and everyone who thinks that less freedom is the answer to the challenges of our time”.
Thomas Deichmann was editor-in-chief and publisher from 1992 to 2011 . Alexander Horn has been managing director since then. Until 2010, Novo appeared as a bimonthly print magazine. From 2009 to 2016 it was called "NovoArgumente" in its own spelling. Since 2016 it has been called "Novo" again with the subheading "Arguments for progress" . That year the Novo editorial team moved to Berlin.
The magazine is a cooperation partner of the likewise libertarian British online magazine Spiked and the annual debate festival Battle of Ideas, which takes place in London . Private sponsors include the Institute of Ideas in London and the Agricultural Industry Association .
In the context of a magazine column for the online magazine Spiked , 2018, Gregor Dotzauer from Tagesspiegel positions Novo-Arguments as Spiked's partner magazine . The orientation of Novo is located as "pathologically industry-friendly".
There is a close cooperation between Novo-Arguments and the medium " Axis of Good " . Dirk Maxeiner co-founder of the axis of the good is Novo Author. The Novo founder and editor-in-chief until 2011, Thomas Deichmann, was a multiple author of the "Axis of the Good" during his time at Novo. Novo articles are regularly mirrored and linked by the "Axis of the Good" .
reception
In 2006, the electricity magazine dealt with the energy industry articles in issue no. 81. The authors came to the conclusion that the articles consistently contained conservative, one-sided arguments that were "garnished" with scientific figures. This was justified, for example, by the fact that, although the inefficiency of the technology was highlighted in the report on solar energy , its unlimited availability, unlike fossil fuels and uranium , as well as its positive effects on the labor market, was not mentioned. Nevertheless, it is advisable to read the booklet, as it contributes to independent thinking.
In 2008, Dirk Maxeiner and Michael Miersch von der Welt recommended Novo-Arguments for readers who do not share the mainstream as a “journalistic refuge for the Enlightenment”. The editors deal with topics such as "Eco becomes large-scale technology" and "Praise to autonomous corporate management". “Anti-nuclear activists” and “genetic engineering panics” would be tackled hard by journalists.
In an article published in the Süddeutsche Zeitung in 2010 , Johannes described Boie Novo as an ambitious, ambitious project with lots of clever texts that is worth reading. Some opinions in Novo seem to be quite bold and sometimes the impression arises that criticism is being exercised for criticism's sake. At the same time, well-known publicists there use the opportunity to write “free of established editorial guidelines” and without significant payment.
In Zeit Campus, Daniel Erk Novo is one of his “Nine Tips for More Political Engagement”. Here liberalism is again "smart and sexy", "a magazine with liberal ideas without the cravatiness of the FDP". It is worth reading, thinking and debating about the texts.
In the context of a magazine column for the online magazine Spiked , 2018, Gregor Dotzauer from Tagesspiegel positions Novo-Arguments as Spiked's partner magazine . The orientation of Novo is located as "pathologically industry-friendly".
The article "The Sorrows of Young Torunarigha" by Stefan Chatrath , Sports Marketing Professor and "Vice-Head of the Scientific Commission of the State Sports Association " , published on the Novo website on February 24, 2020 , regarding the racist insults against the footballer Jordan Torunarigha led to the childbirth Stefan Chatraths from his offices.
