Ingo Potrykus
Ingo Potrykus (born December 5, 1933 in Hirschberg ) is a German biologist . He is professor emeritus at the Institute of Plant Sciences of the ETH Zurich . Potrykus developed the Golden Rice together with Peter Beyer .
Life
Potrykus studied zoology , botany , genetics , biochemistry , philosophy and physical education at the University of Cologne and the University of Erlangen . In 1968 he received his doctorate at the Max Planck Institute for Plant Breeding Research . He received his habilitation in 1982 at the University of Basel .
From 1970 to 1974 Potrykus was Assistant Professor at the University of Hohenheim . He was then group leader at the Max Planck Institute for Cell Biology (1974–1976) and at the Friedrich Miescher Institute (1976–1986). From 1986 Potrykus was a professor at the ETH until he retired in 1999. Since 1989 he has been a full member of the Academia Europaea .
He is married with three children and lives in Magden .

Potrykus' work was aimed at food security in developing countries . The focus was on applications of green genetic engineering in rice ( golden rice ), wheat , millet and cassava .
Potrykus has published about 340 scientific publications and received 30 international patents .
Awards
In 2006, Potrykus was voted the most influential scientist of the decade 1995–2005 in the field of agro-industrial and environmental biotechnology in the journal Nature .
