Hans-Joachim Appell Coriolano (* 1952 in Berlin ) is a German sports doctor and university lecturer .

Life

After 1971 in Berlin passed Abitur studied Appeal in Cologne until 1975 Sport and Latin as well as medicine in Cologne and Aachen . In 1977, at the German Sport University Cologne (DSHS), he began his doctoral thesis on the subject of “The fiber composition and capillary supply of particularly stressed muscles: Investigations on the 'red' M. semitendinosus of the rabbit (Lepus cuniculus) as well as the M. gastrocnemius and M. tibialis ant. of the Japanese dancing mouse (Mus Wagneri Rotans) ”. In 1982 he was awarded the Carl Diem badge.

From 1978 to 1983 he worked as a scientific assistant at the DSHS, in 1981 he completed his habilitation (title: "Anabolic steroids and muscular systems: electron microscopic investigations on the effect of anabolic steroids on myocardium and smooth muscles"). From 1983 to 1995 Appell was first an academic councilor, then an academic senior councilor, and in 1986 he was appointed as an adjunct professor. From 1995 he worked in the rank of Academic Director. Between 1993 and 2002 he was Dean of Faculty II at the DSHS, from 1987 he was a member of the Senate of the Sport University and was its chairman from 2002 to 2007. From 1991 Appell was also chairman of the diploma examination board.

In its research, Appell dealt in particular with topics that affect the muscles, including muscle atrophy, the influence of sympathomimetic substances on the skeletal muscles, as well as the mechanisms and limits of muscle growth. He also dealt with aspects of training science and anatomy. Together with Christiane Stang-Voss he published the book “Functional Anatomy: Basics of Athletic Performance and Movement” and in 1992 with Gert-Peter Brüggemann “Recording and measuring athletic performance”.

In 2006 he was awarded an honorary doctorate by the University of Porto for his services to the partnership between the German Sport University Cologne and the Universidade do Porto . He retired in 2018. His lectures in anatomy were legendary, it was said in the university newspaper of the DSHS on the occasion of his departure, with the description “knowledge transfer packaged in a cabaret manner”. In 2018 he was awarded the bronze medal of the German Sport University.
