The Hans Nüchter observatory is a public and school observatory in Fulda in East Hesse . According to the statutes, it fulfills scientific and, in particular, educational tasks and is accessible to the general public as part of popular education . It is located on the roof of the Freiherr-vom-Stein-Gymnasium . The observatory is run by the “Fördergemeinschaft Volks- und Schulsternwarte Fulda e. V. “and mostly used by students from several schools in Fulda, which are organized in the Astronomy AG. But also adults - especially from the “Association for Natural History in Osthessen e. V. “- do astronomical activities here.

history

Before the Second World War, astronomical observations were carried out by teachers and students from what was then the secondary school on the tower of the city palace in Fulda . To continue this work, an observation station was built in 1971 on the extension of the Freiherr-vom-Stein-Schule . The city of Fulda - as the school authority - was only able to do this with the substantial help of the members of the “Fördergemeinschaft Volks- und Schulsternwarte Fulda e. V. ”to realize. The rotating observation dome was manufactured in-house in 1972 and 1973. The observatory is officially inaugurated on April 22, 1977 during a ceremony. Public relations work begins with the observation of the lunar eclipse in September 1978.

The observatory bears the name of the former city planning officer (1947–1977) of the city of Fulda, Hans Nüchter. Nüchter is considered to be the inventor of the financing solution after the construction of the observatory almost failed due to cost reasons.

equipment

The main instrument is a Newton reflector with a 30 cm opening diameter and 1500 mm focal length . The reflector can be converted into a Cassegrain telescope and thus the focal length can be extended to 3000 mm. In addition, the observatory has an observation platform with bases for various other telescopes.

Planetariums

When the observatory opened in 1977, there was a self-made projection dome with a diameter of three meters for a Baader planetarium in the stairwell. In 1983 a first hole projection planetarium was completed for this dome and described in an article in the magazine " Sterne und Weltraum ". In 1984, planning began for a larger projection dome with a diameter of four meters in a room below the observatory. In 1988 the self-made projection dome was installed and the planetarium including the fixed star projector was put into operation a little later. 2018, the fixed star projector was passed through a FullDome replaced -Videoprojektor.

As early as 1985, members of the observatory began planning what is now the planetarium in the Vonderau Museum in the city of Fulda, which was finally opened in May 1990. Many members of the observatory also work in this planetarium. Institutionally, however, this is separate from the observatory. The operator of this planetarium is the Vonderau Museum .

Events

Public observation evenings and lectures are offered regularly.
