Hans-Otto Georgii

Hans-Otto Georgii (born September 15, 1944 in Cottbus ; † May 16, 2017 ) was a German mathematician who dealt with stochastics . He was a professor at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich .

Career

Georgii received his doctorate in 1972 from the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg under Konrad Jacobs (phase transitions of the first kind in lattice gas models). He completed his habilitation in Heidelberg in 1978 and became professor at the University of Munich in 1981.

Georgii dealt with spatial stochastic systems such as lattice gas models of statistical mechanics and spin-lattice models, Gibbs measures, phase transitions and theory of large deviations.

He is known for a stochastics textbook that has also been translated into English.

From 1982 to 1984 he was co-editor of the Annals of Probability and from 1992 of Probability Theory and Related Fields.
