Hans-Otto Pörtner (born February 22, 1955 in Bünde ) is a German ecologist and climate researcher . He heads the department for integrative ecophysiology at the Alfred Wegener Institute . He was one of the authors of the IPCC's Special Report on Global Warming of 1.5 Degrees in 2018 .

Life

Pörtner received his doctorate in zoology in 1983 from the Westphalian Wilhelms University in Münster and the Heinrich Heine University in Düsseldorf . Pörtner has been a professor at the Alfred Wegener Institute and the University of Bremen since 2005 .

Act

Pörtner's work includes the effects of climate change , ocean acidification, and hypoxia on marine animals and ecosystems with an emphasis on the links between ecological, physiological, biochemical, and molecular mechanisms that limit tolerance and shape biogeography and ecosystem functions .

On the occasion of the publication of the IPCC's special report on global warming of 1.5 degrees , Pörtner and the other authors called for a radical rethinking of climate policy , especially in the energy sector, transport and agriculture, in order to overcome the climate crisis : "Any further warming, especially over 1.5 degrees further increases the risk of long-lasting or irreversible changes such as the loss of ecosystems. "

Pörtner is co-chair of Working Group II of the IPCC on the consequences of global warming and was editor of the 2019 IPCC special report on the oceans and the cryosphere .
