Special report on the oceans and the cryosphere in a changing climate

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The IPCC special report on the oceans and the cryosphere in a changing climate (English IPCC Special Report on the Ocean and Cryosphere in a Changing Climate , SROCC ) is published in the September 2019 report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate of the (IPCC) United Nations . The report summarizes the state of scientific knowledge about the oceans and the cryosphere in a changing climate . It includes the subjects of high mountain regions ; Polar regions ; Sea level rise and changes in the world's oceans as well as extreme and abrupt changes. He also deals with the consequences and risks for low-lying islands, coasts and communities, for marine ecosystems and dependent communities, as well as risk management and adaptation.

A preliminary draft of the report lists the following points:

  • Up to 280 million people could lose their homes in the long term due to rising sea levels . Annual flood damage should therefore increase at least a hundredfold. From 2050 on, low-lying cities and small island states would be hit by extreme floods every year. Dwindling glaciers threaten too much and then too little meltwater in many regions .
  • The global currents in the oceans could also change. Many researchers are concerned that the strong influx of molten freshwater could weaken the Gulf Stream . The first signs seem to indicate this, but many questions remain unanswered. However, the draft predicts the frequency of extreme El Niño events will double if the earth warms two degrees.

Authorship and creation process

This structure and the thematic priorities of the SROCC were determined at the 45th IPCC plenary session in Guadalajara , Mexico (March 28–31 , 2017). The structure is based on a draft that was drawn up at a scoping meeting in December 2016.

The selected experts took on the role of coordinating lead authors and lead authors - who draft each chapter - and the review editors who ensured that comments from experts and governments were properly taken into account in the preparation of the report. The teams are working together on the preparation of the special report, which, including the Summary for Policymakers (SPM), will be presented at a press conference on September 25, 2019 from 11:00 a.m. in Monaco.

A total of about 100 authors who evaluated about 7,000 research papers were involved in the report. The main focus was on the evaluation of scientific literature that has been published since the fifth assessment report (2013/2014).
