Hans-Paul Bürkner (* 1952 in Varel ) is a German management consultant. Until 2013 he was Chief Executive Officer of the Boston Consulting Group .

Hans-Paul Bürkner studied from 1971 at the Ruhr-University Bochum and intervening in the academic year 1973/74 at the Yale University (Degree MA in Economics) Economics (Economics and Business Administration) and graduated in 1976 with the degree of Master of Economics from. He then received his PhD from Oxford University with the help of a Rhodes scholarship . His thesis dealt with saving behavior in the Philippines and Thailand. After a brief stint in corporate finance and international syndication at Commerzbank AG , he joined the Boston Consulting Group in 1981, where he became a partner in 1987. In this position he built up the Frankfurt office, which he headed from 1991 to 1997, and the German banking practice group. Since 1998 he has been on the German executive committee.

The 355 worldwide partners of the Boston Consulting Group elected him the fifth CEO of BCG in 2003, making him the first non-American in this position. He succeeded Carl W. Stern . In 2006 and 2009 he was re-elected for three years each. Since January 2013 he has been Chairman of the Board of Directors of BCG. Richard Lesser is his successor.

Bürkner has been chairman of the German section of the Rhodes alumni association since 2013.
