Hans-Peter Geh (born February 11, 1934 in Frankfurt am Main ) is a German librarian and former director of the Württemberg State Library.

Life

Geh studied history, English and political science in Frankfurt a. M. and Bristol . In 1963 he completed his studies with the state examination and received his doctorate in the same year. He then completed the library traineeship at the Frankfurt University Library . After completing his training at the Frankfurt library, he remained as head of the user department until 1969. At the same time he was director of studies at the Frankfurt library school. In 1968 he organized the general conference of the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA) in Frankfurt.

From January 1, 1970, he succeeded Wilhelm Hoffmann as director of the Württemberg State Library . Here he organized the move into the newly completed building. Geh introduced various organizational innovations and also modernized the library from a technical point of view. The maintenance and expansion of the old stock was also important to him. Spectacular acquisitions in this area were the purchase of a Gutenberg Bible at auction in 1978 and the purchase of manuscripts and incunabula from the Fürstlich Fürstenbergische Hofbibliothek Donaueschingen in 1993/94.

Geh was also involved in numerous national and international library and other committees and associations. He was particularly active in IFLA, of which he was President from 1985 to 1991. Subsequently, Geh was President of the European Foundations for Library Cooperation (EFLC) until 1995. His international activities also included working on the UNESCO project to build a new " Bibliotheca Alexandrina " very close to the famous ancient library. The modern library was opened in 2002.

Hans-Peter Geh was awarded the Cross of Merit on Ribbon in 1989 and the Cross of Merit First Class of the Federal Republic of Germany in 1998. In 2003 he received an honorary professorship from the state of Baden-Württemberg.
