Hans-Rudolf Bork (born August 5, 1955 in Gießen ) is a German geographer specializing in ecosystem research .

Life

Bork studied geography, soil science and geology at the University of Gießen from 1974 to 1976 until his intermediate diploma , from 1976 to 1978 geography, geology, soil science and agricultural hydraulic engineering at the TU Braunschweig and during this time undertook landscape genetic studies on the Canary Islands and heavy rain simulations in the southeast -Spain and Soil Maps in Northern Nigeria. Since then, the focus of his scientific work has been on ecosystem approaches with a focus on soils. In 1978 he became a qualified geographer, and in 1982 received his doctorate from Heinrich Rohdenburg .

From 1980 to 1988 he worked as a research assistant and university assistant at the TU Braunschweig, in 1988 he received his habilitation there for physical geography and geoecology , from 1988 to 1989 he taught there as a temporary professor. From 1989 to 1992 he taught as a professor for regional soil science at the Institute for Ecology at the TU Berlin . From 1992 to 1999 he was Scientific Director of the Center for Agricultural Landscape and Land Use Research in Müncheberg , then from 1996 to 2000 Professor of Landscape Ecology and Soil Science at the Institute for Geoecology at the University of Potsdam . Since 2000 he has been Professor of Ecosystem Research at Kiel University .

In 2005 the "Graduate School for Integrated Studies of Human Development in Landscapes" was started by the German Research Foundation as part of the Excellence Initiative at Kiel University. From 2008 to 2013 Bork was President of the German Society for Geography . His book History of our Environment. Sixty journeys through time (together with Verena Winiwarter ) was voted Science Book of the Year 2015 and Environment Book of 2015.

research

Bork conducts integrative ecosystem and landscape research using geoarchaeological, pedological, hydrological and geomorphological methods. He also examines the consequences of the use of technology in the landscape. In 2002, Bork was elected a member of the Leopoldina .
