Hans-Werner Schuett

Hans-Werner Schütt (born October 6, 1937 in Berlin ) is a German historian of science who has done research primarily on the history of chemistry and the history of alchemy . He taught "History of Exact Science and Technology" at the Technical University of Berlin and held various visiting professorships abroad.

Life

Schütt studied chemistry and received his doctorate in physical chemistry at the University of Kiel in 1966. He initially worked as a scientist at the Pasteur Institute in Paris and at Unilever . In 1975 he completed his habilitation in the history of science at the University of Hamburg. In 1977 he was appointed professor there. In 1979 research stays at various American universities followed. In the same year he was offered a professorship for 'History of Exact Sciences and Technology' at the TU Berlin , which he held until his retirement in 2004. Visiting professorships in Beijing and San José in Costa Rica . Research focus: 19th century chemistry and history of alchemy. Schütt was u. a. President of the Society for the History of Science , chairman of the section on the history of chemistry of the Society of German Chemists , representative of Germany in the History of Chemistry section of the European Federation of Chemical Societies, chairman of an expert committee of the German Research Foundation and the section on the history of chemistry.

Schütt is the author of several monographs, including an extensive work on the history of alchemy (2000). Under the pseudonym HWS Turnau he published a children's book, a short story and a collection of short stories. Schütt is a member of the Berlin Club .
