Hans August von Steindel (born October 21, 1755 in Annaburg ; † February 11, 1825 in Trachenberg ) was a German officer and farmer.

Life

At the age of 14, in 1769, he was sent to the Electoral Saxon Cadet Corps , where he was trained for eight years. In 1777 Steindel changed from the corps as a sub-lieutenant to the Electoral Saxon infantry regiment Prinz von Gotha. Probably due to a lack of career opportunities, he quit military service in 1788 and became a customs collector in Ebersbach in Upper Lusatia. Here Steindel began to occupy himself with agriculture, which he has always had a tendency to do. At the beginning of 1796, Steindel gave up the administration of the collection point, since in November 1795 he had bought the Halbendorf manor near Bautzen, which he now managed himself. This good again selling it acquired the 1796 Freigut Authausen and shortly after, apparently also the local Erbrichtergut. Also selling this property again soon, Steindel acquired the manor Zölschen near Merseburg in 1799 and, after its sale in 1805, the manor in Sitzenroda . Apparently always making a profit by selling the goods, he then acquired the Trachenberg manor in autumn 1811, which he kept. Due to the war, Steidel joined the 1st Meißner Landwehr Battalion in 1814 as a premier lieutenant . With this he made the campaign against France in Belgium. The following year he was garrisoned in Dresden, which caused him to quit military service, now as a major. Thereupon he devoted himself again to the management of his estate Trachenberg.

Steindel was a real member of the Leipzig Economic Society . In addition to his inclination to agriculture, he liked to write, which prompted him to go public with many articles in magazines, but also smaller books in which he reported on his agricultural experiences. He wrote articles for Pahl's Archive of German Agriculture , Schnee's Agricultural Newspaper , the Leipzig Intelligence Journal and many other publications.
