Hans Christian Boas

Hans C. Boas (born June 2, 1971 ) is a German linguist. He is Raymond Dickson, Alton C. Allen and Dillon Anderson Centennial Professor in German Linguistics at the University of Texas at Austin.

Life

Hans C. Boas is the son of the German linguist Hans Ulrich Boas, who was a professor in English linguistics at the University of Erfurt. Hans C. Boas received his PhD from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2000 with a thesis entitled Resultative Constructions in English and German . He had previously completed a Master of Arts in linguistics at the same institution .

From 1994 to 1999 Hans C. Boas worked at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, first as a teaching assistant and then as a teaching fellow. He then did research as a postdoctoral member of the Frame Net research group at the University of California, Berkeley . He has been with the University of Texas at Austin since 2001.

In 2007 Hans C. Boas received the Leibniz Institute for German Language Promotion Prize and in 2011 the Leonard Bloomfield Book Prize of the Linguistic Society of America for his research on Texas German (i.e. the German language spoken in Texas by descendants of German immigrants ).
