Hans One (born June 5, jul. / 17th June  1856 greg. Farm Kingu, community Uniküla , parish Sangaste , Governorate of Livonia ; † 23. February 1927 in Valga , Estonia ) was an Estonian educator , author of textbooks and cultural workers .

Youth and studies

Hans Eine was born on June 17, 1856 in the Sangaste parish in the Uniküla parish on the Kingu farm. His educational path began in the Uniküla community school and continued in the Sangaste parochial school. Because of the early death of his parents, he was unable to continue studying, even though he had graduated from school with excellent results. Thanks to the support of the landowner Balthasar von Campenhausen, who paid the training costs of 120 rubles a year, the young man was able to study in Valga in the seminar of the parochial school teachers Valga Kihelkonnakooliõpetajate Seminar (known as "Cimzes Seminar" after the name of the long-time director Jānis Cimze ) continue (1874–1878).

Educational activity

He got his first job in the parochial school of Tori . Two years later, in 1880, the 24-year-old Hans Eine was appointed head of the Peetri church school in the town of Walk (the former town name of the twin towns of Valga and Valka). This was the first Estonian school in Valga. Soon the school was named after its head one-school . The school existed for 37 years until it was temporarily closed in October 1917 due to economic difficulties, but the school did not reopen later. Over 3000 young Estonians received their elementary education in this school. Over the years, Hans Eine worked as a teacher in several schools in Valga: in Cimzes seminar, in the city school, in the Progymnasium for girls, in the secondary school and in the elementary school.

Literary activity

In addition to his professional work, Hans Eine also worked as an author . He worked as a correspondent for newspapers and wrote textbooks for schools. In 1885 his most important work, the "Short Lessons of the Estonian Language for Elementary Schools" appeared. The book had two more editions. His next works were also very successful: “Teaching the Estonian Language for Primary Schools” and “Teaching the Estonian Language for Schools”. Both books had eight additional editions and were in use in schools for half a century. Thus, Einer's contributions to the development of the Estonian language and grammar were extremely remarkable. He also dealt with translation and collected folklore .

Participation in cultural and social life

Hans Eine was actively involved in the cultural and social life of Valga.

  • Under his direction, the first Estonian-language play was performed in Valga in 1881 : Johann Kantswey's village tragedy Mihkel ja Liisa ehk: Vaata, mis rikkuse ahnus teha võib ("Mihkel and Liisa. Or: What greed can do").
  • In the same year he founded the first Estonian singing choir in the city.
  • In 1891 he was elected chairman of the first Estonian association in Valga, the Valga Estonian Abstinence Association.
  • In 1902 he was elected the first chairman of the "Säde" association that had just been founded.
  • In 1903 he was elected one of the three directors of the “Säde” -Dahrlehnes- und Sparkasse (the other two were Johannes Märtson and Tõnis Grünberg).
  • In 1907 he was elected member of the Assembly of Representatives of the Estonian Literary Society ( Eesti Kirjanduse Selts ).
  • In 1917 Hans Eine was mayor of Valga for a short time .
  • In 1925 the first singing festival was held in the Valga district . Hans Ein had great services in the organizational work.

family

Hans One was married to Marie Koger, the daughter of the landlord Jaak Koger. They had a total of eight children, three of whom died as children and one in adolescence.

Hans Eine died on February 23, 1927 and was buried in the Luke cemetery in the Latvian city of Valka .
