Hans Freese (sculptor)

Hans Freese (* before 1690 probably in Lübeck ; † after 1710) was a sculptor and carver who worked in Lübeck in the first quarter of the 18th century.

Life

Not much is known about Freese's personal circumstances. His first job is detected in the course of the renovation of the by Benedict Dreyer created organ prospectus of the Marienkirche in Lübeck under the mayor and churchwardens Anton Winckler , which he shared with the church painter Anton Wortmann performed. The two hovering angels on the organ of the Marienkirche from 1705 have not survived; they burned with the organ after the air raid on Lübeck in March 1942 . The epitaph from 1707 for the Lübeck mayor Gotthard Kerkring has been preserved . In 1708 Freese made the baroque pulpit for the Lübeck Aegidienkirche based on a design by Karl Krieg , which was created with funds from the foundation of the Lübeck merchant Lorenz Russe († 1584). He was also involved in the baroque design of the baptismal font in Aegidien, according to the municipality's account books in 1710.

Until 1707 Freese also created marble busts (Duchess Friedrike Amalie, Duke Christian Albrecht and Duke Friedrich IV.) For the upper princely vault of the Gottorf dukes in Schleswig Cathedral .
