Hans Friedhelm Gaul

Hans Friedhelm Gaul (born November 19, 1927 in Bicken ) is a German lawyer and former professor at the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn .

Life

Gaul grew up in Dillenburg , where he first attended school. After he was drafted into military service in 1944, he was later wounded and taken prisoner of war. After the end of the war, he made up his Abitur at the Dillenburger Gymnasium and in 1948 began studying law at the University of Frankfurt am Main . In 1952 he passed his first state examination in law, and in 1957 his second. Gaul had already obtained his doctorate in law under Gerhard Schiedermair the year before . From 1957 to 1965 Gaul worked as a research assistant to Friedrich Wilhelm Bosch at the University of Bonn . There he completed his habilitation in the winter semester of 1965/66 with the unpublished work The Legal Conflict in the Light of the History of Dogmas and Codification .

Even before completing his habilitation, Gaul had held a chair at the University of Bochum in the winter semester of 1965/66 . In the summer semester of 1966 he worked there as a visiting professor . In 1966 he followed Bosch to the chair for civil law and civil procedural law at the University of Bonn. Also in 1966 Gaul founded the institute for civil procedural law at the university, of which he became director. In the academic year 1969/70 Gaul was dean of Bonn's law and political science faculty. In 1993 Gaul retired. The University of Athens awarded Gaul an honorary doctorate in 1999 .

Gaul's students include Eberhard Schilken and Ekkehard Becker-Eberhard .
