Hans Gerny

Hans Gerny (born June 26, 1937 in Olten ; † January 19, 2021 in Bern ) was the Christian Catholic Bishop of Switzerland from 1986 to 2001 .

Life

After studying theology at the Christian Catholic theological faculty of the University of Bern, Hans Gerny was vicar in Möhlin at the St. Leodegar Church and then pastor in Wegenstetten - Hellikon - Zuzgen (1962–1971), Baden - Brugg (1962–1965) and Basel at the Predigerkirche (1971–1986). On June 9, 1986, he was in Biel elected bishop and received on 26 October 1986 in Church of St. Martin in Olten by the Archbishop of Utrecht Antonius January Glazemaker the episcopal ordination. In 2001 he received an honorary doctorate from the Christian Theological Academy in Warsaw . Gerny was a member of the central committee of the World Council of Churches until his death .

During his tenure as bishop, the ordination of women in the Christian Catholic Church in Switzerland fell. His concern was to discuss this question in the churches of the Union of Utrecht in order to come to a decision without dividing the church.
