Hans Gottlieb of Gemmingen

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hans Gottlieb von Gemmingen (* before 1649; † in May 1691 in Bürg ) was a Kurmainz forest official. He was wealthy in Reichartshausen . After the death of two half-brothers, he took possession of Bürg in 1690 , where he was stabbed to death the following year. The instigation of the murder may have come from his brother, the Baden-Durlach court councilor and chief court master Johann Bernhard von Gemmingen (1656–1723).

Life

Hans Gottlieb came from the Bürg-Presteneck branch of the Barons of Gemmingen and was the son of Achilles Christoph von Gemmingen (1619–1676) from his first marriage to Benedikta Elisabetha Greck v. Kochendorf († 1648). The father was the landlord in Bürg and had a total of 18 children from three marriages. In 1671, in the name of his son Johann Gottlieb, the father acquired two thirds of the village of Reichartshausen with all rights, although it was mentioned at the time that Hans Gottlieb would inherit one third of the father's property. In 1677 a contract of inheritance was drawn up.

In July 1678 Gottlieb von Gemmingen stabbed Hans Kaspar von Lindemann zu Pleidelsheim to death. In the years that followed he was searched for several times without being able to get hold of him.

Hans Gottlieb converted to the Catholic faith and entered service in the Electorate of Mainz, where he was promised a post as chief hunter. In 1686 he was chief forester in Lorsch , but then left Kurmainz and turned to Bavaria. After the death of two half-brothers, he took possession of the family property in Bürg, whereas his brother Johann Bernhard (1656–1723), Baden-Durlach's court advisor and chief steward of the Hereditary Prince Karl Wilhelm , protested from Geneva , where he was accompanied by the prince . In May 1691 soldiers broke into Burg Castle and stabbed Hans Gottlieb von Gemmingen. Hans Gottlieb's brother Johann Bernhard was accused of instigating the murder, so that an imperial commission was set up against him.
