Hans Grudge

Hans Groll (born January 14, 1909 in Linz , † August 29, 1975 in Vienna ) was an Austrian sports scientist , sports educator and pioneer of sports science in Austria.

Professional career and scientific importance

As the technical director of the Institute for Physical Education and later Director of the Federal Institute for Physical Education in Vienna, he made it his life's task to develop the work of his teachers Karl Gaulhofer and Margarete Streicher into the typical Austrian form of physical exercise, the "natural gymnastics". At the same time, he vigorously promoted the recognition of the subject as a fully valid university discipline with the right to award doctorates and its own institute status in the scientific and university policy area . As editor he was responsible for the magazine "Leibesübungen - Leibeserbildung", which appeared from 1946, as well as for the series of publications "Theory and Practice of Physical Exercises". He completed his habilitation with the didactic-historical topic “Systematiker der Leibesübungen”, was appointed director of the Federal Institute for Physical Education at the University of Vienna , and in 1969 he was finally appointed professor to the newly established chair for “Theory of Physical Education” Death remained. In August 1975 he succumbed to longstanding cancer. The "Hans Groll-Plakette" was named after Hans Groll and is awarded to distinguished scientists and educators in the field, such as Annemarie Seybold in 1980 .
