Hans Gutermuth was the son of the later Darmstadt professor of mechanical engineering and dean of the mechanical engineering department, Max Gutermuth . In 1909 he was one of the leaders of a group of Darmstadt assistants and students who were enthusiastic about aviation and who founded the Flug-Sport-Vereinigung Darmstadt in August 1909. Within this association they started building gliders. In 1911, on an excursion to the Rhön , they discovered the Wasserkuppe as a particularly suitable area for gliding. On July 22nd, 1912, Hans Gutermuth flew with the motorless double-decker FSV X from the Wasserkuppe with a distance of 843 m and 1:52 min. Flight time a world record that was only broken in 1920 by Wolfgang Klemperer with the monoplane Black Devil of the Aviation Science Association Aachen . After his flight training in Johannisthal near Berlin, Hans Gutermuth passed the pilot's exam on April 28, 1914. He fell in the First World War as a lieutenant in the reserve on February 16, 1917 in France as the so-called Old Eagle , as aviation pioneers were called who had a license before the war. He was a member of Jagdstaffel 5.
