He then worked in the Bavarian civil service in the central workshops in Nuremberg . From 1881 he was initially an assistant at the TH Munich and in the same year at the TH Aachen . There he completed his habilitation in 1887 and was appointed private lecturer on February 27, 1887. From 1888 he was a full professor of mechanical engineering in Aachen. In 1896 he was appointed to a professorship for mechanical engineering at the TH Darmstadt . In the winter semester of 1896/1897 he took over the chair for thermal engines from Ernst Reichel, who was appointed to the TH Berlin in 1896 . The management of the power plant of the university and of the mechanical engineering laboratory I was connected with this chair. The equipment of the machine house built by Georg Wickop from 1901 to 1904 in Magdalenenstrasse was based on his planning . The first four-stage steam turbine built on the European continent was set up in this mechanical engineering laboratory.

From 1903 to 1907, from 1912 to 1915 and from 1921 to 1924 Gutermuth was dean of the mechanical engineering department and the mechanical engineering and paper engineering department at TH Darmstadt . From 1905 to 1907 he held the office of rector. On May 2, 1910, the Hessian Flight Study Company was founded in Darmstadt with Gutermuth significantly involved. In this club, schoolchildren and students who were enthusiastic about flying came together around his son Hans Gutermuth and built a. a. Glider.
