Hans Herbst (basketball official)

Hans Herbst (born January 21,  1944 ) is a former German basketball official and trainer. From 1982 to 1999 he was manager of the Bundesliga club Bamberg and also acted twice as interim coach.

career

In 1982 Herbst, who worked as a judge at the Bamberg District Court from 1975 to 2008, took up the post of sporting director at the Bundesliga club FC Bamberg (later TTL Bamberg). At the beginning of 1983 he took over the coaching post of the team until the end of the 1982/83 season after separating from Ludovit Karpil . Herbst was unable to prevent relegation to the 2nd basketball division . In the following season 1983/84 the US coach Dirk Dunbar Bamberg led back to the Bundesliga. In the spring of 1988, Herbst jumped in as a coach in addition to his duties as a manager and led the team, which was now the TTL Bamberg, to sixth place in the table.

In the run-up to the 1988/89 season, Herbst hired Terence Schofield as coach, who led Bamberg to the DBB Cup victory in 1992 and the German runner-up in 1993. In 1999 Herbst and the TTL chairman Heinz Tengler decided to give up the Bundesliga license for financial reasons. Herbst withdrew for health reasons. The right to play was transferred to the newly founded Basket Bamberg GmbH, which from then on operated the Bundesliga team TSK Universa Bamberg.

From 2009, Herbst worked as an independent and neutral ombudsman for the Bundesliga basketball league and thus, according to the league, “a person of trust for players, coaches, managers, club employees as well as referees and commissioners”. In September 2015 he was also appointed ombudsman by the 2nd Bundesliga basketball division.
