His dissertation The main directions of literary sociology and their methods. A contribution to the theory of the sociology of literature appeared as a book two years later. After his habilitation in 1972, he took over the position of a scientific council at the University of Heidelberg , which was later transferred to a professorship for sociology. Joining defines the intersubjective action of the people involved in literature as an object of the sociology of literature. She is not interested in literary work as an aesthetic object. For them, literature only becomes significant insofar as action takes place with it, in it and for it. With this, Fügen is getting closer to Alphons Silbermann's position . From his portrayal of the Marxist view of literature, he draws the conclusion that, according to his understanding, the subject of sociology of literature becomes “more negatively than positively visible”. If the subject of literary sociology is not determined by the aesthetic structure of the work, neither form nor content, but "only the trappings, namely production, distribution and reception", Nicole Köck interprets this as "the end of literary sociology".
