Piepho received his doctorate in Göttingen in 1935 and completed his habilitation in Cologne in 1942. He then worked as a university lecturer in Cologne and from 1945 in Göttingen. In 1949 he became an associate professor, in 1964 an associate professor and in 1967 finally a full professor. He worked as a developmental physiologist at the Second Zoological Institute of the Georg-August University in Göttingen . His research area was the control of larvae and pupa moulting in insects by means of hormones ( juvenile hormone ). His main research object was the large wax moth (Galleria mellonella).
