Hans Riehm

Hans Riehm (born June 3, 1902 in Karlsruhe , † August 29, 1984 in Mosbach (Baden)) was a German agricultural chemist and soil scientist.

Live and act

Riehm studied chemistry at the Technical University of Karlsruhe and passed the diploma examination there in 1925. He then worked at the Institute for Physical Chemistry in Stockholm until 1936. In the meantime he worked at the Agricultural College in Copenhagen . With the studies he carried out there on the silicate buffering of arable soils, he was awarded a Dr.-Ing. PhD.

At the end of 1936 Riehm returned to Germany. After a brief activity with Theodor Roemer at the Institute for Plant Cultivation and Plant Breeding at the University of Halle , he took on an assistant position at the Institute for Plant Nutrition and Soil Biology there in 1937, where he mainly dealt with methodological questions about the determination of plant nutrients in arable soils. From 1941 to 1944 he worked as a senior assistant at the Institute for Arable and Plant Production at the Reich Research Institute for Agriculture in Bromberg .

From 1946 to 1967 Riehm was director of the Baden State Research and Research Institute in Augustenberg . At the same time he worked as a private lecturer in soil science at the Hohenheim Agricultural University and the TH Karlsruhe . In 1958 he was appointed adjunct professor at the Technical University of Karlsruhe with Venia legendi for plant nutrition and soil science. He played a decisive role in the reconstruction of the Association of German Agricultural Inspection and Research Institutes . From 1948 to 1954 and from 1961 to 1966 he was chairman of the Soil Research Section of this association.

Research services

The name Riehm is inextricably linked with the development of a universal method for determining the plant nutrients phosphorus and potassium in the soil as the basis for targeted fertilization measures. Riehm modified a method developed by the Swedish agricultural chemist H. Egnér in 1932 to determine phosphorus in lime-poor soils so that it was also suitable for determining phosphorus in lime-rich soils and at the same time for determining the potassium content. Most of Riehm's publications on this method appeared between 1938 and 1948 in the journal Plant Nutrition, Fertilization, and Soil Science . The method, which was soon referred to in the specialist literature as the "double lactate method (DL method) according to Egnér-Riehm", has been one of the internationally recognized standard methods in the field of soil analysis for decades.

In Augustenberg, Riehm also dealt with the development of methods for determining trace nutrients in soils, rainwater and the air. He has published two extensive commemorative publications on the development history of the Augustenberg experimental and research institute, which he heads, and on the work carried out there.

In 1967 Riehm was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit, 1st class . In the same year, the Association of German Agricultural Inspection and Research Institutes made him an honorary member. In 1968 the Swedish Agricultural College in Uppsala awarded him an honorary doctorate.
