After beginning his studies in Zurich in 1953, after three semesters he moved to Basel to attend Karl Barth's lectures . A semester abroad in Bonn in 1956 also served for this purpose. Ruh received his doctorate in 1963 as Dr. theol. with Karl Barth in Berlin. From 1963 to 1965 he worked for the Gossner Mission in East Berlin. Thereafter, from 1965 to 1983, Ruh headed the "Institute for Social Ethics" of the Federation of Protestant Churches in Switzerland. Between 1983 and 1998 he was a full professor at the University of Zurich and was also director of the "Institute for Social Ethics" in Zurich. He was also involved in ethical business consulting as well as the development of ethical financial products.

Ethical market economy

In his publication - Order from Below (2011) - Ruh drafts the concept of an ethical market economy based on the order model of the social market economy , which he wants to understand as the answer to the “permanent crisis situations” in global space.

For decades, Hans Ruh has been grappling with the issue of unconditional basic income . He has summarized his thoughts on this in the book Unconditional Basic Income: Incitement to a new way of life .
