Hans Sassmann (politician)

Hans Sassmann (born June 6, 1892 in Mauer near Melk ; † January 10, 1968 in St. Pölten ) was an Austrian politician ( ÖVP ) and farmer. Sassmann was 1945-1962 President of the Parliament of the State Parliament of Lower Austria .

Career

Sassmann completed a business apprenticeship and was in military service or as a Russian prisoner of war from 1913 to 1919. Between 1923 and 1928 he worked as a welfare councilor for the city of St. Pölten and from 1925 was chairman of the local farmers' council. He also worked in the Lower Austrian Farmers' Union and in agricultural cooperatives. Sassmann was city councilor in St. Pölten from 1934 to 1938, where he also ran an agricultural business. After the National Socialists came to power in 1938, he was arrested on short notice for political reasons.

After the Second World War, Sassmann became chairman of the district chamber of farmers in 1945 and held several functions in agricultural cooperatives. He represented the ÖVP in the state parliament between December 12, 1945 and June 19, 1962 and was at the same time the first president of the state parliament, although at 17 he was the longest-serving president of the state parliament. Sassmann was awarded the professional title of Economics Council and in 1962 the Ring of Honor of the State of Lower Austria .
