Mauer is a place of the market town of Dunkelsteinerwald in the Melk district in the Mostviertel ( Lower Austria ).
geography
Mauer is located a few kilometers east of Melk am Mauerbach, which flows into the Pielach . On January 1st, 2020, Mauer had 591 inhabitants.
history
The names muri , ad mura , apud mura or the German names Mour or Mower have been known since the 11th and 12th centuries. In 1083 the village and 1096 the church was first mentioned as a foundation. The name is reminiscent of the remains of a wall, presumably Roman, that the medieval settlers noticed.
According to the legend of St. Gothalm, he wanted to visit St. Koloman's grave as a servant and died here of grief and exhaustion (1017/1018). When miracles happened at his grave , his bones were transferred to those of his master in Melk Abbey .
At that time, the old Roman road above the town, to which the typical field name " Hochstraße " still refers, was evidently even more important. The history of the church and the Mauer parish goes back to the early settlement history of the Dunkelsteinerwald . The powerful Counts of Formbach founded it in 1096 and transferred it to the Göttweig monastery around 1110 .
Economy and Infrastructure
The place is part of the community of Dunkelsteinerwald, which maintains a community building with a volunteer fire brigade , community office and registry office in the center. Some farms give the place a certain character. Since there is only one bakery and small businesses , the place is strongly oriented towards the neighboring community of Loosdorf . The town center has been expanded significantly in the last few decades with numerous single-family houses . The importance of the place is essentially related to the artistic value of the carved altar of the church.
Culture and sights
The most important sight of the Wall is the pilgrimage church Mauer with a carved altar from the early 16th century. In addition, there is a Gothic column of light , which is dated to the year 1520, and an image of the Virgin Mary on a house in a wall that was transferred from a demolished building. Another important feature is a Roman bridge near Lanzing , which was built around the 3rd or 4th century.
Surrounding wall
Mauer is not far from the city of Melk , Melk Abbey and the renaissance castle Schallaburg . One of the most beautiful sections of the Danube , the Wachau , lies north of the village.
