Hans Schanzara

Hans Schanzara , actually Hans Schwanzara , (born June 8, 1897 in Karlsruhe , † October 31, 1984 in Cologne ) was a German opera singer ( bass ) and composer .

Life

Schanzara was first trained in his hometown and then lived in Radolfzell on Lake Constance until he was hired to Münster in 1921 , where he also met his wife Gertrud. This was followed by positions at the Stadttheater Kiel (1924–1928), Stadttheater Dortmund (1928–1938) and from 1939 until 1952 at the Cologne Opera House.

In the opera he mainly sang comic roles such as “Figaro” in Figaro's wedding , “Baculus” in Wildschütz von Lortzing, “Beckmesser” in Meistersingern and “Kezal” in Smetana's Bartered Bride .

He was also employed in the operetta, worth mentioning are his portrayals as “Zsupan” in the gypsy baron and “Ollendorf” in the begging student .

In 1937 he sang the world premiere of the operetta Zauberin Lola by Eduard Künneke . He was also active as a composer, his operetta Die Nachtigall was successfully premiered in Cologne in 1947. A number of orchestral compositions by Schanzara, which are located in the field of light symphonies, were recorded at WDR Cologne with the Cologne Radio Symphony Orchestra under Franz Marszalek .

His daughter was the actress Tana Schanzara (1925-2008).

stage name

Schanzara deleted the “w” from his family name because he was tired of being called “little tail”.
