Hans Schepers (water polo player)

Hans Schepers (born March 26, 1930 in Hamm , † January 2, 2012 ibid) was a German water polo player and coach.

Career

Schepers was a trained master optician. He played for 18 years at the water polo club SC Rote Erde Hamm . From 1953 to 1965 he took part in all the finals for the German championship and won the title six times with his club (1954, 1955, 1956, 1959, 1960, 1964). As captain, he led the German national water polo team to sixth place at the 1960 Olympic Games in Rome .

At the age of 35 he ended his playing career and became a coach. From January 1, 1969 to 1972 he was the DSV national coach for water polo players. During his tenure at the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich , the German national team achieved fourth place, the best result since 1936.

For his sporting success he was awarded the Silver Laurel Leaf on May 2, 1960.
