Johannes Cornelis "Hans" van Baalen (born June 17, 1960 in Rotterdam ; † April 29, 2021 ibid) was a Dutch politician of the People's Party for Vrijheid en Democratie (VVD). From November 2015 until his death he was party leader of the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe (ALDE) .

Life

After finishing school in Krimpen aan den IJssel , van Baalen studied law at the University of Leiden . From 1999 to 2002 and from 2003 to 2009 van Baalen was a member of the Second Chamber of the States General . From 2009 to 2019 he was a member of the European Parliament . In October 2009 he took over the chairmanship of the Liberal International , which he held until 2014. He was a colonel in the reserve and in this capacity was on a foreign assignment in Bosnia in 2002.

In Nicaragua , van Baalen was persona non grata from 2011 after, according to statements by those involved, he met with the military there to discuss an uprising against the incumbent government.

Van Baalen was one of 89 people from the European Union against whom the Russian government imposed an entry ban in May 2015 .

Since 2017 he has been a member of the Board of Trustees of the Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom .

Van Baalen was married and had one son.
