Life

With the help of a scholarship arranged by the soprano Mimi Coertse , Hans van Heerden studied singing at the Vienna University of Music with the well-known tenor and singing teacher Josef Witt . After winning several prizes at the Vienna International Singing Competition , he began his career as an opera singer in Europe . During his training he received a guest contract for the role of Jago in Otello at the Stadttheater Ulm . This was later followed by permanent engagements at the Bonn Opera and at the Wiesbaden State Theater in the 1960s . At the opening of the 1966/1967 season he sang Iago at the Wiesbaden State Theater alongside Hermin Esser (Othello); van Heerden designed his role as "vocal and gestural-mimic powerful, at times almost wonderfully brutal." In the 1968/69 season he was committed to the Frankfurt Opera as a permanent member of the ensemble .

Van Heerden's repertoire mainly comprised the roles of the youthful hero baritone and the character baritone. He sang Iago , alongside Mario del Monaco , the title role in Rigoletto (partners as Gilda were Ileana Cotrubaș and Edda Moser , among others ), Amonasro in Aida with Martina Arroyo , the police chief Scarpia in Tosca , the title role in Nabucco , the Sebastiano in Tiefland with Rudolf Schock , the Mandryka in Arabella at the side of Lisa della Casa and Anneliese Rothenberger (Zdenka) and the Rodrigo in Don Carlos together with Kim Borg (as Philipp).

He kicked u. a. in the TV show " One will win " recorded on March 12, 1966 as a guest together with Elwira Scholz .

Van Heerden was the first artist to be awarded the Nederburg Prize for Opera des Orange Free State in 1973 and is the only artist to have received this prize seven times to date. From 1978 to 1990 he was artistic director of the SUKOVS opera department of the Orange Free State. From 1992 to 1995 he was director of the opera school at the Technikon in Pretoria ( Pretoria Technikon ).
