Haparanda-Tornio Bandy (short name HT-Bandy or HTB ) is a Swedish - Finnish bandy club from the twin cities of Haparanda and Tornio at the mouth of the Torne älv ( Finnish Tornionjoki ) in the Gulf of Bothnia . The club emerged in 2008 from a syndicate between the clubs Haparanda SKT and Tornion Palloveikot , which had existed since 2004, and which started under the name Eurocity Bandy for the first two years . The first team plays in the Swedish league system, the reserve team in the Finnish one.
background
The two places Haparanda and Tornio have close common historical roots. In the 14th century, the Finnish-settled Tornedalen ( Finnish Tornionlaakso ) came under Swedish influence. The east of the Torne älvs Tornio ( Swedish Torneå ) became the central place of the region. When the river formed the new border between the two empires in 1809 as a result of the Russian-Swedish war , there were only a few farms on the western side. In 1821, however, Haparanda was raised to a Köping .
The two places are now directly opposite each other and are only separated from each other by the Torne älv and a river island belonging to Finland. Haparanda and Tornio have been working closely together since 1987 under the project name Provincia Bothniensis , and there is cooperation in numerous areas of public life. Among other things, the cross-border region of Tornedalen has had a common flag in the colors yellow-white-blue since July 15, 2007 .
The place Haparanda has around 5000 inhabitants, the city of Tornio over 20,000.
History of the club
The syndicate was formed in the summer of 2004 between the clubs Tornion Palloveikot and Haparanda SKT. Both clubs contributed several talented, especially younger players. The own teams of the two parent clubs remained or were later rebuilt. The squad in the first 2004/05 season included 14 Finns and five Swedes. Under the name Eurocity Bandy, the team entered the second-rate Division 1 in Sweden in 2004/05 , where they took over from Haparanda SKT. Attempts to name the association after the historic Provincia Bothniensis region did not receive any major support. The team also received reinforcements from outside for the coming season, but there were difficulties in the agreement between the two parent clubs on questions of the squad composition. Eurocity Bandy took third place in the northern group of Division 1 in 2006 and took part in the promotion round to the first-class Bandyallsvenskan , but in which the promotion was not made.
In the 2006/07 season, the syndicate came under the name HaparandaTornio Bandy . They finished third and played in the following season in the Allsvenskan, which became Sweden's second bandy league with the introduction of the new single-track Elitserien. HaparandaTornio was second in the northern group and took part in the promotion round to the Elitserien , but remained without a win. In the summer of 2008 the basis of the cooperation between the two associations was clarified, as a result of which the association was founded in its current form on July 22, 2008. In 2008/09 the club immediately won the northern group of Allsvenskan and prevailed in the subsequent round of promotion against Falu BS , Gripen BK and Tillberga Bandy , with which they were promoted to the first division.
In the first season in the Elitserien 2009/10 HT-Bandy was ninth out of 14 teams. A year later, however, the club came only to the penultimate 13th place and rose again to the Allsvenskan, in which the team has been playing in the northern group since 2011.
Stadion
The venue for the home games is the Gränsvallen sports complex in the Marielund district of Haparanda. An alternative name for the facility is Arena Polarica . A grandstand offers space for around 1,800 spectators.
