Haplochromis aeneocolor ( synonym : Astatotilapia aeneocolor ) ( Lat . Aenus = bronze, color = color) is a cichlid which endemic in the Great Lake George and Kazinga channel , the drain of the lake to Lake Edward occurs. The species is said to have been introduced intothe Aruwimi , a right tributary of the Congo.

The fish species can reach a standard length of 7.5 cm. The body height is 35 to 41% of the standard length, the head length is 32 to 37% of the standard length. Males are dark sulfur yellow in color, the rear trunk and the tail stalk are yellow-green, with a bluish tinge. The back is bronze, the lower chest area is sooty. The front section of the dorsal fin, supported by hard rays, is dark, transparent, the tips of the fin membranes are black. The rear part of the dorsal fin is transparent, the edge is purple. The anal fin is transparent at its base, the outer two thirds are pink to purple in color. She wears orange-yellow egg spots. The pectoral fins are black, the pelvic fins transparent. Females are gray-silvery to gray-yellow. Their dorsal fin shows dark stripes, especially in the hard-radiating part, anal fin and pelvic fins are transparent.

The spade-shaped caudal fin is scaled on its basal (proximal) half.

Way of life

Haplochromis aeneocolor occurs mainly on the papyrus coasts of the lake and is completely absent in open water. During examinations, mainly plant fragments and insect larvae were found in the stomachs. Detritus is also likely to play an important role in diet. Like all Haplochromis species, Haplochromis aeneocolor is an ovophilic mouthbrooder in which the female takes care of the brood.
