Haplochromis humilis is a so far little researched African cichlid species that occurs in Angola.

features

The fish are about 11 cm long and have a rather elongated body. The body height is around 27% of the total length. The head length is about 31% of the total length. Haplochromis humilis has a dirty yellowish-brown basic color, the belly is yellowish-white. There are no cross bars on the sides of the body. The scales of the trunk have dark edges. There is a black spot on the gill cover. The dorsal and caudal fins are patterned with round black spots. These are larger on the dorsal fin than on the caudal fin. The anal fin has only a few, but large, spots. The tips of their fin rays are blackish. The dorsal fin is unusually low, the caudal fin is rounded.

Like all Haplochromis species, Haplochromis humilis is a mouthbrooder .

Systematics

The species was described in 1866 by the Austrian zoologist Franz Steindachner as Chromis humilis and later placed in the genus Haplochromis . However, this assignment is questioned (gender placement uncertain). The type is not part of "Lake Victoria region super flock" that is the Cichlidenradiation that in Victoria , in Lake Kivu , in Lake Albert , in Lake Edward , in Lake George , the Lake Kyoga , in Turkana , in the Lake Rukwa and lake nabugabo occurs and most of the genus Haplochromis is assigned, but together with 'Haplochromis' placodus , 'Haplochromis' smithii and 'Haplochromis' snoeksi to a related group of cichlids from southern Africa, which, derived from the genus Serranochromis, has received the provisional name “Serranochromini”.
