features

The fish species can reach a total length of 13 cm. The body height is 37 to 39% of the standard length , the head length is about 34% of the standard length, the muzzle length is 33.5 to 34.5% of the head length. The easily retractable mouth extends below the pupil. Dominant males are almost completely black to greenish-black, only the edge of the dorsal fin, some spots and stripes on the dorsal fin, the rear edge of the caudal fin and most of the anal fin are scarlet. The latter has three to four yolk-yellow egg spots. Inferior males are blue-gray, the reddish fin parts are pale. Females are gray, yellow-gray or olive-green, their fins gray-green to yellowish and transparent. The forehead line indented over the eyes of older animals is characteristic of the species.

Way of life

The black mouthbrooder occurs in the shallow, vegetation-rich water of the bank regions and is an omnivore that feeds primarily on insect larvae and small crustaceans. Like all Haplochromis species, the black mouthbrooder is an ovophilic mouthbrooder in which the female takes care of the brood. A brood comprises around 30 to 50 young fish, which are finally released from the mouth after just under three weeks.
