from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Harald PW Ibach (born April 15, 1941 in Rheine ) is a German solid-state physicist .

Live and act

Ibach received his doctorate in 1969 in Aachen with his dissertation: Thermal expansion of silicon and zinc oxide and completed his habilitation in Aachen in 1972 with his habilitation thesis: Low energy electron spectroscopy - a tool for studies of surface vibrations . From 1975 he was first a lecturer and then a full professor at RWTH Aachen University as well as director of the Institute for Layers and Interfaces, Chair of Experimental Physics IV A in Jülich . He is currently (2017) visiting scientist at the Peter Grünberg Institute of the Jülich Research Center .

He deals with surface physics of solids and spectroscopic methods, electron energy loss spectroscopy, thin layers, adsorption and reaction of gases on surfaces, and vibration spectroscopy on surfaces.

Together with Hans Lüth , he is the author of a German standard textbook on solid state physics.

In 1992 he received the CMD Europhysics Prize and in 1986 the Medard W. Welch Award .
