Harald Motzki

Harald Motzki (born August 25, 1948 in Berlin ; died February 8, 2019 in Goch - Asperden ) was a German scholar of religion and Islam.

Live and act

Harald Motzki completed his training in Germany. His subjects included religious studies, Semitic studies, Islamic studies, Old Testament studies and history. He received his doctorate in 1978 at the University of Bonn on the subject of Ḏimma and Égalité: the non-Muslim minorities of Egypt in the second half of the 18th century and the Bonaparte expedition (1798–1801) . He was Professor of Islamic Studies at the Faculty of Philosophy, Theology and Religious Studies at the University of Nijmegen (Radboud Universitet Nijmegen) in the Netherlands . His fields of work included the exegesis of the Koran , tradition of hadith and the beginnings of Islamic jurisprudence . He contributed various articles to the Encyclopaedia of Islam .
