Harbel is a small town in Margibi County in the West African Republic of Liberia , it had 23,402 inhabitants in the census (2008) and is located on the lower reaches of the Farmington River , about 15 kilometers from the Atlantic coast.

Harbel is located about 24 kilometers east of the capital Monrovia and forms the center of the rubber plantation founded in 1926 by the Firestone Tire & Rubber Company . The place name Harbel was derived from the first names of the founder Harvey S. Firestone and his wife Isabelle . In the north of the main town of Harbel is the factory settlement of Harbelville , which was built by the Americans, and on the other side of the river is the town of Owensgrove . The Roberts International Airport , the most modern airport in the country, is located on the southern outskirts . The Firestone hydroelectric power station is located on the Farmington River at “Mount Hydo” . A river port created by the Firestone Plantation enables the rubber to be transported inexpensively to the nearby Freeport Monrovia . The main industry in the city is the rubber industry. In 1952 an institute for tropical medicine was founded in Harbel .
