Hard Knocks is the 21st studio album by musician Joe Cocker . It was released by Sony Music in October 2010 . The album reached number one in the German album charts.
Origin and style
Hard Knocks was produced by Matt Serletic , who also contributed to the songwriting . Serletic worked with Matchbox Twenty and also oversaw Carlos Santana's last album . The title song is a pop song influenced by soul and rock , with brass sections and female backing vocals. According to Cocker, the piece was "a little autobiographical," he associated it with his early years when he played in small clubs. Cocker presented the piece in German-speaking countries at Wetten, dass ..? and then began his local tour. With I Hope a cover from the Dixie Chicks is included.

Artur Schulz from Laut.de described Hard Knocks as “good to well above average”, even if “not everything shimmers gold”. The album is "put together harmoniously and well". Unlike in the past, there is no “complete failure” included. It awarded three out of five stars. At t-online.de, Thomas Flormann wrote that the album “relies on the grating voice as the best-known trademark and the radio suitability that is expected from such a name after more than forty years and 21 studio albums anyway.” He rated it positively that Cover versions are almost entirely dispensed with, but also criticized the music as “predictable”. At swr.de, Günter Schneidewind came to the conclusion: “Solid work with some interesting nuances ...”. "No more, no less." In the Hessian Radio was Hardknocks that "an entire track more pop than the last albums" sword, presented as "CD of the Week".
