Harding is a town in the uMuziwabantu parish in the Ugu District ( KwaZulu-Natal , South Africa ). It is located in the valley of the Mzimkulwna River in the west of the South Coast region at an altitude of 899 meters. In 2011 the city had 9,544 inhabitants. The city is located near Kokstad in the former Griqualand East . The Oribi Gorge Nature Reserve and Port Shepstone are also on the South Coast , but in its eastern part.

The city got its name from Sir Walter Harding , the first presiding judge of Natal . The town was originally intended as a military post after the British took control of Griqualand East in 1874. The region's abundant natural resources brought a certain degree of prosperity, so that in 1882 the city's first hotel was built. However, the area was still "no man's land". To secure it, barracks for 25 mounted police officers and accommodation for a district judge had to be built.

The Alfred County Railway , a narrow-gauge railway that connected Harding with the port city of Port Shepstone from 1917 , brought the great economic boom . The economic activities in Harding are mainly in the dairy industry and in the cultivation of timber .

Rail freight traffic ended in 2001 when it shifted to road transport. Today the well-developed national road N2 runs around the northern outskirts of Harding . Harding has an airfield with two runways that are 1127 meters and 731 meters long. It lies at 879 meters above sea level.
