uMuziwabantu (also Umuziwabantu , English uMuziwabantu Local Municipality ) is a South African municipality in the district of Ugu , KwaZulu-Natal . The seat of the local government is Harding . Dixie Nciki is the mayor. The ANC has the majority in the local council.

The name of the community comes from the isiZulu term for 'a house with open doors for everyone'.

geography

uMuziwabantu is in the west of the district and borders the Eastern Cape Province to the north, west and south and the municipalities of Umzumbe and Ray Nkonyeni to the east . uMuziwabantu lies at the foot of the Ingeli Mountains and the Umtamvuna River forms the southern border. The municipality covers an area of ​​1089 square kilometers.

uMuziwabantu is a rural community. Much of the community is administered by the Ingonyama Trust . Over half of the municipal area is used as agricultural land, mainly as arable land and commercial forest. The only city is Harding.

population

In 2011 the community had 96,556 inhabitants. 97.9% black, 1.1% colored and 0.5% white.

The first language was 88.1% isiZulu , 4.9% isiXhosa , 2.9% English and 1.3% isiNdebele .

economy

The main pillars of the economy in uMuziwabantu are agriculture and tourism.

Various types of timber are grown in the municipality: acacia , eucalyptus , pine and poplar . A processing industry has settled around wood cultivation.

uMuziwabantu offers different habitats and species of veld that are particularly interesting for ecotourism . The rare steel swallow ( Hirundo atrocaerulea ) breeds in the Ingeli Mountains.
