Umzumbe ( English Umzumbe Local Municipality ) is a South African municipality in the district of Ugu , KwaZulu-Natal . The seat of the municipal administration is Mathulini . The ANC has the majority in the local council.

The municipality is named after the Umzumbe River . Legend has it that cannibals lived in the area. In 2011, according to the census, the population was 160,975 over a total area of ​​125 square kilometers.

Umzumbe is the largest municipality in the district in terms of area. The border of the municipality runs along the coast from Mthwalume to Hibberdene and extends about 60 kilometers inland. There are numerous areas in the community that are administered by the Ingonyama Trust . 27 percent of the municipal area consists of bushland, 24 percent is cultivated for personal use, 17 percent consists of grassland , 12 percent is used for forestry and 7 percent for sugar cane cultivation. The municipality is very rocky and hilly.

The first language was 95.3% isiZulu , 1% isiNdebele and 0.7% each was English and isiXhosa .

economy

Umzumbe is a rural and poor community. Only around 50 percent of the population are potential gainfully employed persons, of whom only around 9.5 percent are actually employed. Almost 60 percent of households living on an income below 500 rim is (as of about 2010).

The largest employers are the authorities and agriculture. Large-scale agriculture, however, only exists in the northern and eastern areas of the parish outside of the tribal areas, although the potential is high.
