uMdoni (also Umdoni , English uMdoni Local Municipality ) is a municipality in the South African district of Ugu in the province of KwaZulu-Natal . The administrative seat of the parish is Scottburgh . Ntombifikile Herminah Gumede is the mayor. The ANC has the majority in the local council.

The municipality is named after the umdoni tree ( Syzygium ) , which is native here . The Zulu term Umdoni stands for 'here we are beautiful'. In 2011 the community had 78,875 inhabitants according to the census. At that time it covered an area of ​​238 square kilometers. In 2016, parts of the Vulamehlo community came to uMdoni.

The community is located on the east coast of South Africa approximately 50 kilometers from Durban and 65 kilometers from Port Shepstone . 44 percent of uMdoni's residents live in urban areas. On the coast these are the cities of Scottburgh, Park Rynie , Pennington , Sezela , Bazely , Ifafa , Elysium and Mtwalume , in the interior the cities of Umzinto / Umzinto North with Shayamoya and Esperanza . In the rural areas of the parish are farms and land administered by the tribal authorities.

uMdoni has a high unemployment rate of 42 percent (as of 2001); In 1996 it was only 25 percent. 90 percent of the population have to get by on less than 800 rand (approx. 80 euros) a month.

Scottburgh is the commercial center of the parish. The most important areas are tourism and agriculture. The N2 offers the municipality a connection to the metropolitan municipality eThekwini and to the south. The R56 connects uMdoni with Bergville and Underberg . There is also a rail link in Scottburgh.

The community has a popular resort in Scottburgh with bathing in the sea and in swimming pools and other sports facilities. There are also facilities for campers and caravan owners. Another vacation spot is Mtwalume . This is where the Mtwalume Ski Boat Club is located, one of the most famous water skiing facilities in KwaZulu-Natal.

Agriculture

In addition to tourism, the community's economy depends on commercial fishing and some large-scale commercial farms. Mainly sugar cane and timber are grown on the farms . On a small scale, these products are also grown in the tribal areas.
